For 1951 Ford went through a clean-looking flacelift.
The single bullet in the center of the grille was replaced
by two...one at each end of the center grille bar. The chrome
molding above the center bar was smoothed out to match., i.e.,
no hump over the center bullet. The interior was upgraded
and all instruments were positioned in front of the driver.
Finally, Ford offered an automatic transmission...a two speed
Ford-O-Matic. And they came out with Ford's first hardtop
coupe, the Custom V-8 Victoria. The Custom Victoria proved
to be a success, selling over 110,000 its first year. Ford
overall sales slipped in 1951, but so did the other major
automakers, a reflection of the government's production restrictions.
